I had the privilege and honor to work with Scott Schlackman from 2005 to 2008. In my 35-year career, Scott proved to be not only the best manager, the best leader, but also the best teacher I have ever worked with. He brought vision, leadership, engagement and charisma to our business; a style which impact quickly turned into real profit dollars. In a span of a little more than two years, our team moved from an ‘average’ delivery to world-wide leading results. I worked with Scott while being President of Europe, Middle and Africa for Avon Products in 2004 and 2005.  At the time, Scott was the President of Western Europe with general management responsibility for France, Italy and Germany.  These markets were some of the most challenged in the portfolio requiring a strong seasoned leader to drive sustained top line growth in addition to a comprehensive focus on improving profitability.  In this capacity, his strong field experience and ability to nurture relationships, was key to his overall success.  In addition to strong field leadership capabilities, Scott also possesses a strong Marketing background which was invaluable in ensuring alignment of our consumer and channel strategies.  Finally, his general management skills were critically important when reducing waste and non value added fixed costs in order to create incremental investment dollars to drive growth and deliver overall profit targets.

I have known Scott for over 25 years. We have worked together for most of those years, and for over 5 years he was my boss twice. I have been a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood Florida for 23 years. Six years ago I was offered the opportunity to develop a pediatric palliative care program for the hospital. Palliative care is a relatively new medical specialty and as such is unfamiliar to much of the healthcare establishment. Palliative care is care whose goal is to improve the quality of life of patients living with life-threatening illnesses and their families. This is accomplished by an interdisciplinary team providing excellent pain and symptom management and  psychosocial and spiritual support, often beginning at the time of diagnosis of illness and continuing throughout the trajectory of the illness.  As a clinician I had never participated in program development and had no experience with marketing. Initially I had to make my case for financial sustainability to my administration. Next I had to do internal marketing to a wide variety of stakeholders at many levels throughout the healthcare system. Mr. Schlackman provided me with many tools and strategies and helped me develop a marketing action plan. He also fine-tuned my communication skills, thus making me a better educator. Even though he is not in the medical field, he was able to quickly apply his extensive business knowledge to the medical arena in order to help me design an education program and to overcome barriers. Now 6 years later, my program is the most successful in South Florida, but we are constantly expanding and I continue to rely on Mr. Schlackman for assistance as we grow.

It is with great pleasure and a lot of pride that I share a few words on Scott. Scott’s greatest strengths while serving as the President of Avon Canada were to develop and empower people and he did that with candor, respect and great emotional intelligence. He was able during his tenure to give and to share his knowledge of the business with everyone in the organization starting with his direct reports and through the organization.
